I know it is only September (well, almost October, actually!) and the Christmas season might seem far away to some, but I am sure there are some shoppers out there who have most of their shopping done!  Over labor day I decided to make an advent calendar.  I have been wanting to make one for a few years, but by the time I remember that I want to make one, it is already November and the harried holiday season begins with the stress of shopping, baking, planning, and partying, with many birthday celebrations sprinkled in during that time period as well for our family.

Here you can see Hadassah’s box – the picture is from her first Christmas, and December 21st is her half birthday, so she is box #21

Over labor day weekend I was with family, and it was generally decided that we would all do some sort of craft.  My mom was going to paint, and I was rather focused on making something for the new baby.  However, upon browsing the aisles of Hobby Lobby and feeling frustrated with my non-crafting self, my mom and aunt found a cool box with 25 drawers marketed as a Christmas countdown.  At first I wasn’t very enthusiastic about doing something for Christmas, but I thought, “Why not?”  I decided that in a way, the advent calendar is for the new baby, as it brings us another step closer to being what I like to call an “official” family – a family that has their own things and practices their own traditions.

Besides decorating and designing the actual calendar, I spent quite a bit of time looking for the perfect verses to put in each box for each day and typing them up.  I also found premade fun activities to include for each day as well.  I went to the blog Design Dazzle for over 100 activities for advent.

For most of the verses I included, I tried to find an Old Testament prophecy about Jesus and then show the fulfillment of the prophesy in the New Testament for the following day.  Here are the verses in order:

  1.  Advent – the period of expectation of the birth of Christ.
El Adviento – el periodo de un tiempo de preparación para el nacimiento de Cristo
  2. Micah 5:2 “But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah,
though you are small among the clans of Judah,
out of you will come for me
one who will be ruler over Israel,
whose origins are from of old, from ancient times.
  3. Proverbs 30:4  Who has gone up to heaven and come down? Who has gathered up the wind in the hollow of his hands? Who has wrapped up the waters in his cloak? Who has established all the ends of the earth? What is his name, and the name of his son? Tell me if you know!
  4. Isaiah 7:14 Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel
  5. Matthew 1:18,25  This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit.  But he had no union with her until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus.
  6. Jeremiah 31:15 – This is what the LORD says: “A voice is heard in Ramah, mourning and great weeping, Rachel weeping for her children and refusing to be comforted, because her children are no more.”
Matthew 2:16 – When Herod realized that he had been outwitted by the Magi, he was furious, and he gave orders to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity who were two years old and under, in accordance with the time he had learned from the Magi.
  7. Psalm 72:10  – The kings of Tarshish and of distant shores will bring tribute to him; the kings of Sheba and Seba will present him gifts.
  8. Isaiah 60:6 –  Herds of camels will cover your land, young camels of Midian and Ephah. And all from Sheba will come, bearing gold and incense and proclaiming the praise of the LORD
  9. Matthew 2:1,11–  After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magia from the east came to Jerusalem 2and asked, “Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star in the East and have come to worship him.” 11On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold and of incense and of myrrh
  10. Psalm 2:7 – I will proclaim the decree of the LORD: He said to me, “You are my Son; today I have become your Father.
  11. Matthew 3:17 –  And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.”

Emmanuel also gets his own box! His original due date was December 5th, so he gets box #5

  12. Genesis 22:18 – and through your offspring all nations on earth will be blessed, because you have obeyed me.”
  13. Galatians 3:16 – The promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed. The Scripture does not say “and to seeds,” meaning many people, but “and to your seed,” meaning one person, who is Christ.
  14. Tribe of Judah
Genesis 49:10 – The scepter will not depart from Judah, nor the ruler’s staff from between his feet, until he comes to whom it belongs and the obedience of the nations is his.
Luke 3:33 – the son of Amminadab, the son of Ram, the son of Hezron, the son of Perez, the son of Judah,
  15. House of David
Jeremiah 23:5 – “The days are coming,” declares the LORD, “when I will raise up to David a righteous Branch, a King who will reign wisely and do what is just and right in the land.
  16. Luke 3:23, 31 – Now Jesus himself was about thirty years old when he began his ministry. He was the son, so it was thought, of Joseph, the son of Heli, the son of Melea, the son of Menna, the son of Mattatha, the son of Nathan, the son of David,
  17. Line of Jesse
Luke 3:32 – (He was) the son of Jesse, the son of Obed, the son of Boaz, the son of Salmon, the son of Nahshon,
  18. Colossians 1:17 – He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.
  19. Shall be called Lord
Psalm 110:1 – The LORD says to my Lord: “Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet.”
  20. Luke 20:41-44 – 41Then Jesus said to them, “How is it that they say the Christd is the Son of David? 42David himself declares in the Book of Psalms: “‘The Lord said to my Lord: “Sit at my right hand 43until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet.”’ 44David calls him ‘Lord.’ How then can he be his son?”
  21. Isaiah 33:22 – For the LORD is our judge, the LORD is our lawgiver, the LORD is our king; it is he who will save us.
  22. Matthew 27:37 – Above his head they placed the written charge against him: THIS IS JESUS, THE KING OF THE JEWS.
  23. Isaiah 7:14 – Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel.
  24. Matthew 1:23 – “The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel”–which means, “God with us.”
  25. Isaiah 9:6-7 – For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the LORD Almighty will accomplish this.

Those that know me know that I have very limited crafting ability, so I was very excited with my product.  In addition, even though I am a get-to-the-end-product-asap kind of person, I actually enjoyed the process of this project!  I am looking forward to creating more things like this in the future that will hopefully become a family heirloom.
